Genesis 28:20-35:29 Jacob
w/Leah
1. Reuben born 1751 BC when Jacob was 85 years old
2. Simeon born 1750 BC
3. Levi born 1749 BC
4. Judah born 1748 BC
9. Issachar born 1746 BC
10. Zebulun born 1745 BC & a daughter Dinah (possibility that Zebulun & Dinah were twins)
w/Bilhah (Rachel's handmaid)
5. Dan born 1749 BC
6. Naphtali born 1748 BC
- Jacob was with Laban, Rebekah's brother in Haran, for a month before offering to serve Laban 7 years for Rachel, to marry (Laban's daughter). Per Bullinger KJV Companion Bible, Jacob's servitude to Laban began 1758 BC (based on numbers, I'm thinking perhaps 1759 BC) when Jacob was 78 (or 77).
- Laban tricked Jacob and gave him his eldest daughter Leah to wed instead (1752 BC when Jacob was 84 years old). Understandably so, Jacob was displeased. Laban agreed to go ahead and also give Jacob Rachel (as was previously promised) after a week with Leah in exchange Jacob was to serve him another 7 years (ending in 1745 BC when he was 91 years old & Joseph was born).
- Laban gave Leah Zilpah for an handmaid, and Rachel he gave Bilhah.

- Leah's plan with the mandrakes in Genesis 30:14-16 was when Reuben was 5 years old.
- Jacob went on to work for Laban an additional 6 years beyond the 14 years of servitude for his wives in exchange for agreed upon wages. Jacob served Laban a total of 20 years.
- Per Bullinger KJV Companion Bible, Jacob fled Laban in 1739 BC when Jacob was 97 years old.
- Esau resided in the land of Seir where the Edomites resided. Isaac resided in Hebron (Mamre).
- The angels of God met Jacob on his journey to meet his brother for both his protection and to assure him. The name of the place they met was Mahanaim which means "two camps".
- Jacob prayed to God before meeting with his brother Esau asking for protection and mercy, and reminding God of His Covenant.
- Jacob wrestled with God all night until being subdued in Peniel (Penuel). The word "prevailed" in Genesis 32:25 means "overcome". God touched the ligament of Jacob's hip joint ("sinew" means ligament/tendon). My thoughts are that what Jacob was contending with, and why God had to overtake him, was his spirit of ego. God needed him to humble for his journey forthcoming.
- After this, God changed Jacob's name (Jacob meaning "contender") to Israel (meaning "God commands, orders, rules").
- Jacob peaceably met with Esau on the road between Penuel and Mahanaim in 1738 BC (according to Bullinger KJV Companion Bible dating).
- Jacob journeyed to Succoth in 1737 BC, then on to Shalem, a city in Shechem in 1736 BC when Jacob was 100 years old (Bullinger KJV Companion Bible dating). Jacob bought a parcel of a field in Shechem from Hamor (Shechem's father). Hamor begat Shechem; they were Hivites.
- While in Shechem, Dinah was raped and desired as a wife by Hamor. Per Bullinger KJV Companion Bible dating, this happened in 1732 BC when Dinah was only 13 years old, 4 years after Jacob (and family) moved there (when the eldest son, Reuben was 19 years old).
- This was another attempt at destroying the seedline. If the whole House of Jacob had intermixed with the Hivites as was proposed.
- The two named brothers in the revenge regarding Dinah were Simeon (18 years old) and Levi (17 years old).
- In 1731 BC, when Jacob was 105 (per Bullinger KJV Companion Bible dating), God instructed him to go to Bethel where God reiterated His Covenant with Jacob and that his name was to now be "Israel".
- Benjamin was born in 1728 BC when Joseph (direct brother with same mother, Rachel) was 17 years old & Israel was 108 years old. Rachel died during childbirth (in my opinion, because of her deceit with her father's idols and having still held on to them....in her pagan practice would be a detrimental influence to Joseph and God's plan for him).
- Also in 1728 BC, Reuben (age 23) forfeited his birthright to Joseph (age 17) in lying with Israel's concubine (and mother of two of his half-brothers).
- Israel (110 years old) reunited with his father Isaac (170 years old) in 1726 BC, 10 years before Isaac died in 1716 BC (per Bullinger KJV Companion Bible).
Genesis 36:1-43 Esau
- Esau also called Edom, father of the Edomites and his descendants are listed along with the other inhabitants of mount Seir where they resided (Edom). Interesting study much later regarding the Idumeans (Edomites), Nabataeans (from Ishmael), who lived in Petra and later inhabited Samaria/Israel/Canaan after the captivities of the Israelites, and king Herod's heritage.
Genesis 37:1-36 Joseph
- Joseph was 17 when he had his dreams (1728 BC). Both of his dreams, the sheaf and the sun/moon/stars, was a foretelling about his time in Egypt and the famine to come and his role in it.
- Israel resided in Hebron at this time. Joseph's 10 older brothers had gone to Shechem to feed the flocks. Israel sent Joseph to check on them in Shechem, but they had traveled to Dothan where Joseph found them. Their conspiracy to kill Joseph out of jealousy was thwarted by Reuben and Judah. Reuben would have been 24 years old at this time and suggested instead of killing Joseph, that they should cast him into a pit. His plan was to return to the pit and rescue his brother. It was Judah's (21 years old) suggestion to sell Joseph as opposed to killing him.
- The Ishmeelites and the Midianites were interchanged as to whom Joseph was sold to as they were both descendants of Abraham and were mixed together only distinguished by their nose rings.
- Joseph was sold for 20 pieces of silver to the Ishmeelites/Midianites in 1727 BC when Joseph was 18 years old and Benjamin was only 1 years old (per Bullinger KJV Companion Bible dating). Isaac would still have been alive at this time and for another 11 years after Joseph was sold (Israel was 109 years old). So Joseph was sold prior to Israel reuniting with Isaac. Paying attention to all the parenthetical verses between events that have things out of chronological help to provide understanding of the history and God's plans.
- The Ishmeelites/Midianites then sold Joseph to Potiphar in Egypt where God's plan for the whole 12 tribes of Israel could take root.
Genesis 38:1-30 Judah
- Judah was one of the two tribes for which Christ would come (Judah=king line and Levi=priest line). Judah marrying a Canaanite would not produce offspring that would be part of this genealogy to Christ. Judah and Shuah (a Canaanite) begat Er, Onan, and Shelah. Er married Tamar. Upon Er's death and based on practice, his wife was given to Onan. Upon Onan's death Shelah was withheld from Tamar until he was of age. Judah did not abide by this as promised, and did not give Shelah to Tamar.
- Judah was in the wrong in marrying a Canaanite (not keeping to God's instruction of keeping the seedline clean), not giving Shelah to Tamar (which was actually for the best because the seedline would not be intermixed/influenced through Shuah's heritage), for lying with someone he thought to be a harlot (Tamar was not a harlot or doing anything other than taking what was owed her by the practices at that time).
- Judah and Tamar begat the seedline that would be the king line of the tribes of Israel. The twins born would create two branches. One branch would lead to Christ and the other branch would lead to the kings of the Isles/England. The twins were Pharez (to breach through to come out first, means "breach") and Zarah (scarlet thread, means "a rising of light"). Later to be discovered, this scarlet thread would play and important role in the Israelites and the Promised Land.
- The House of Pharez-Judah would be the branch for which David to Christ would come.
- The House of Zarah-Judah would be the branch that would travel to the British Isles and later mix with the Pharez-Judah line preserving God's Everlasting Covenant until the King of Kings returns in the 2nd Advent.
Genesis 39:1-40:11 Joseph in Egypt
- Joseph was framed by Potiphar's wife and thrown in prison. It's unclear how long he was in prison before interpreting the Butler/Baker's dreams, but at the time he interpreted their dreams he had been in Egypt for 10 years. Per Bullinger KJV Companion Bible dating, this occurred in 1717 BC when Joseph was 28 years old.
