The Abrahamic Covenant followed the seed line from Abraham to Isaac to Jacob. Genesis 17, Hebrews 6. Jacob, whose name was changed by God to Israel (Genesis 32:28), had 12 sons that became the 12 tribes of Israel. Israel blessed his son Josesph's two sons Manasseh and Ephraim when they were in Egypt. In doing this a 13th tribe was established. Genesis 48
The 12 Tribes of Israel (in birth order)
Reuben
Simeon
Levi
Judah
Dan
Naphtali
Gad
Asher
Issachar
Zebulun
Joseph
Benjamin
Joseph's sons became the Birthright and 13th Tribe of Israel. Manasseh was the first born, but was blessed by Israel as the second born. Manasseh was promised to be a great nation and Ephraim was promised to become a company of nations. As we study the scatterings of the 13 tribes post Captivity, you will see that even these promises were upheld. Manasseh being the great nation of the United States of America and Ephraim being the company of nations of Great Britain. The tribe of Judah remains on the thrown as promised by God when established with David in II Samuel 7:11-17. It is a fascinating study to follow this particular tribe to Great Britain.
