Day 4 Genesis 40:12 - Genesis 50:26

Genesis 40:12-47:26 Joseph and the Famine
  • While Joseph remained in prison in Egypt, Pharaoh had dreams that could not be interpreted (1715 BC per Bullinger KJV Companion Bible dating). This would put Joseph 2 years in prison beyond when he had interpreted the Butler/Baker's dream (and 12 years in Egypt after being sold by his brothers).
  • So, like the parables in the New Testament, God interpreted the dreams. All the land (not just Egypt, but also Canaan) would have 7 years of plentiful harvests, followed by 7 years of famine. God always gives us a heads up, if we are opened to His direction!
  • It was advised that a 5th part of the land should be stored up during the 7 years of abundance in order to survive the 7 years of famine.
  • Joseph was made ruler over Pharaoh's house, second in command/ruler only to Pharaoh over all of the land of Egypt.
  • The land of Goshen in Egypt was ruled by the Shepherd Kings, Hyksos, and other non-Egyptian peoples. The Egyptians did not herd sheep, etc., and had Hebrews of this area doing these things that they felt were abominable. It was from this stock of ancestors of Joseph that he was given in marriage. Both the name that Joseph was given by the Pharaoh (Zaphnath-paaneah meaning "abundance of life") as well as the name of Joseph's wife (Asenath) were Egyptian names, not reflections of them being of Egyptian descent. Asenath was the daughter of  the priest of On. Lots more on this when we do a deeper study into the early Adamic/Eber Hebrews/locations and interactions with the Abrahamic Hebrews.
  • The 7 years of "plenty" were from 1715-1708 BC, Joseph 30-37 years of age.
  • Joseph begat two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.
  • The 7 years of famine were from 1707-1700 BC, Joseph was 38-45 years of age. The famine was all over the earth with all countries migrating to Egypt for food.
  • The 10 brothers made a trip to Egypt most likely in the 1st year of the famine, a second trip which included Benjamin in the 2nd year of the famine, returning for a 3rd and final time with the entirety of Israel and offspring. Benjamin would have been 22 years old during the second year of the famine (1706 BC).
  • Joseph hadn't seen his brother Benjamin since Benjamin was a year old.
  • In Genesis 45:8 the reference to Joseph being "father to Pharaoh" was an Egyptian title of high office of state.
  • The land of Goshen referenced in Genesis 45:10 was where the Hyksos resided in Egypt, and naturally where the Israel Hebrews would be placed.
  • God promised to be with Israel on the third trip down to Egypt with Israel as well as the promise to bring them up again. In 1706 BC, Israel was 130 years old (Joseph was 39 years old).
  • The 215 years of the sojourning in Egypt began in 1706 BC (and ended at their Exodus in 1491 BC). It was half of the 430 years that began in 1921 BC, Genesis 12:4.
  • Counting Joseph and his two sons, 70 souls came from Israel and were now in Egypt.
  • The Hyksos residing in Goshen were set aside/away from the Egyptians as they being shepherds were an abomination unto the Egyptians, Genesis 46:34.
  • The brethren of Joseph were given Pharaoh's cattle to herd in Goshen for him.
  • Once the money was used up, then cattle/herds/flocks were traded for food, then the land was given. From the years of the famine, Pharaoh owned everything in Egypt except for the priest's land. The people of Egypt were sworn servants of Pharaoh.
Genesis 47:27-50:26 Israel's Blessings
  • Joseph's sons were blessed first before the other 12. Israel claimed Ephraim and Manasseh as his own, and Israel put his name on them. Thereby giving them inheritance and blessings along with the 12 other sons, making a 13th tribe of Israel.
  • Israel put Ephraim before Manasseh in his blessing of the two sons (Manasseh was Joseph's firstborn, but Ephraim was blessed as the firstborn son.). Ephraim was blessed to become a multitude of nations (and would become England). Manasseh was blessed to become a great nation (and would become the United States of America). In this, Joseph was given a portion above his brethren. Once they entered the promised land after the Exodus/wandering, the land inheritance would be divided by tribe. Joseph's inheritance of land went through Manasseh and Ephraim (12th and 13th). Levi, as the priest tribe, would not own land.
  • Reuben's firstborn blessing was taken away as a result of him lying with his father's concubine.
  • Simeon and Levi's anger was cursed due to their involvement with the slaying of Shechem's house in revenge for their sister Dinah.
  • Judah was blessed as the king line until the 2nd Advent when the true King of Kings comes.
  • Israel died in 1689 BC, after all his sons were blessed. He was 147 years old at his death. Joseph was 56 years old, and had been in Egypt for 38 years.
  • Joseph died in 1635 BC when he was 110 years old, and having been in Egypt for 92 years.
